Albany Creek SHS-Additional Accom

[24.07.2019] Architectural plans of the new building proposed for Albany Green State High School.

Biscoe Wilson Architects were invited by the Queensland Department of Education to be the principle consultant for a new building for the expanding Albany Creek State High School. A combined one-storey and two-storey building with a cranked ‘L’ shape was proposed to suit the long sloping terrain. The ‘L’ plan also establishes a feeling of opportunity and refuge. The plan and section were designed to minimise earthworks onsite while enabling a connection from the school on the lower side of the building through to the existing sporting facilities adjacent the upper level.  A lift and covered link expands the accessible network around the school.

Downstairs, the building will accommodate a new Robotics and Development area. A variety of General Learning Areas (GLAs), Flexible Learning Areas (FLAs), Staff Rooms, a data room, and provisions for future amenities will help ease the growing student population at Albany Creek State High School. The angled ‘L’ shape and sloping site provided the opportunity for an outdoor amphitheatre.

The proposed building is currently under development, with works expected to be completed for use in 2020. This new building, like many others Biscoe Wilson Architects have designed, is designed to be environmentally sustainable and provide an inspiring and comforting atmosphere ideal for both teaching and learning. The linear, single room thickness plan promotes cross ventilation and natural day lighting. Environmentally sustainable design and appropriate passive solar design is a fundamental objective at Biscoe Wilson Architects. We are interested in creating excellent education facilities that promote learning and well-being.

Materials were chosen to be durable yet playful. The Colorbond Whitehaven roofs and Shale Grey metal wall sheeting compliment the Dulux Softsun, Spring Sprout and Quarterdeck fibre cement wall sheeting. Inside, the Godfrey Hirst Curriculum Study Green and Tuition carpets are both refined and inspired.

Springfield Central Multipurpose Hall

[11.O6.2019] Construction is underway for the Springfield Central Multipurpose Hall. The ‘E’ shaped building in the aerial below is the Springfield Central State High SLC Building.

[15.03.2019] Biscoe Wilson Architects were engaged by the Queensland Department of Education in 2016 to prepare the sketch design for the Multipurpose Hall and Community Centre, a joint initiative between Springfield Central State School and the Ipswich City Council (ICC). Biscoe Wilson Architects were later selected to finalise the design by the D&C contractors. This unique project borders the Springfield Central State School and a new sporting facility by the Ipswich City Council. The design allows both users to negotiate the use of the multipurpose hall in the centre of the building, with school facilities to the south of the building and the ICC facilities to the north. The design provides separate access points for the school and ICC, with appropriate security considerations between areas.

The multipurpose hall is naturally ventilated with clerestory ridge ventilation and mechanically operated louvers. Low level louvers and roller shutters help provide a cross ventilation and convention cooling. Low-velocity large-format fans assist with air movement.

The ICC and community areas feature:

  • Multi-purpose meeting rooms;
  • Consulting rooms;
  • Offices;
  • Amenities;
  • A foyer with servery; and
  • Opportunities for expansion

The school facilities include:

  • A separate foyer with servery;
  • Change rooms and amenities;
  • Kinesiology laboratories; and
  • Staff facilities

[2019] The multipurpose hall at the Springfield Central School is currently under construction.

Kelvin Grove State College Multipurpose Hall and QBA

[11.06.2019] Construction has started on both the Multipurpose Hall (Centre) and the Queensland Ballet Academy (Top Right) at the Kelvin Grove State College.
[15.03.2019] Site Plan for the Kelvin Grove State College Multipurpose Hall (Centre) and the Queensland Ballet Academy (Top Right).

[15.03.2019] Biscoe Wilson Architects were successful in the Queensland Department of Education’s competitive tender process for two major projects at the Kelvin Grove State College (KGSC); the Queensland Ballet Academy and the Multipurpose hall. Lifts in both new buildings extend the accessibility network through the school, reinforcing the Department of Education’s intention to make new and existing school buildings accessible and equitable for all. The two new buildings incorporate a similar material pallet to the adjacent 6 level Flying Start building, designed by Biscoe Wilson Architects in 2015. Together, these new buildings further expand the centre of excellence capabilities of this inner-city school.

[15.04.2019] The Multipurpose hall designed for Kelvin Grove State College includes an option for future expansion as shown above.

The Department of Education partnered with the Queensland Ballet (QB) to develop a unique dance facility on the KGSC campus, supporting students who will later pursue dance at QV’s West End facilities. The Queensland Ballet Academy (QBA), located to the north-east corner of the KGSC campus, is a two-storey facility incorporating:

  • 6 dance studios (including 2 performance studios that can be opened into a single large space);
  • Green rooms;
  • Amenities for staff and students;
  • Staff room;
  • Loading dock;
  • Parking;
  • General learning areas (GLAs); and
  • Promenade areas for students to stretch and practice

Studios feature high ceilings (4.2m) for versatility of spaces. This has created a particularly tall building, so the roof form has been folded down to the west to transition the building height down to the covered link connecting back to the hall.

Additionally, KGSC’s new multipurpose sporting hall will be a three storey building incorporating:

  • A carpark, 14 general learning areas (GLAs) and amenities at ground level
  • A two court hall on the first floor (with opportunity to expand to three courts in the future) at the first level; and
  • A specialist sporting facility, kinesiology labs, gymnasium, weights and spa/ ice baths on the mezzanine level.
[Feb 2019] Construction has officially started on the new multipurpose hall at Kelvin Grove State College.

[31.01.2019] Biscoe Wilson Architects have recently completed the design of Kelvin Grove State College’s new multipurpose hall and Queensland Ballet Academy hall.
