Having worked with Bulimba State School previously, Biscoe Wilson Architects were engaged to find additional classroom accommodations at the school. Bulimba State School has a tight and sloping site and so buildings need to be carefully designed for durability, sustainability and flexibility, while aligning with the school’s ethos. The site chosen staggers down the slope to maintain views to the heritage-listed A Block while utilising difficult land.
The 10 General Learning Area (GLA) block incorporates an undercroft / amphitheatre and was designed to step down the site and link into the existing spine circulation path connecting to the existing school. The linear north facing plan is solar efficient and promotes cross ventilation. Water harvesting and other environmental sustainable design initiatives are used as a learning aid for students. The building was opened by the then Prime Minister, Mr Kevin Rudd, in 2008.
