Calliope State High School

Winner of the QMBA Project of the Year award for Education Facilities up to $10 million

Biscoe Wilson Architects were approached by the department of Education to design and document a new high school proposed for Calliope, near Gladstone. We worked closely with Paynters to complete the masterplan, and detailed design for the first stage of the school. These nine buildings include an admin, resource centre, multipurpose hall, hospitality block, canteen, science centre, and technology centre. This project provided an unique opportunity to showcase Biscoe Wilson Architects’ focus on designs that provide comfort, innovation, inspiration and sustainablity.

The materials were chosen for their sustainability, durability, and ease of maintenance. The rooves and awnings are to be Colourbond Whitehaven and metal wall cladding to be Colourbond Shale Grey. Interpon Precis Pure Gold is to be used as a feature on several screens and gates throughout the school.

Biscoe Wilson Architects have worked with Paynters on previous projects, such as the Springfield State High School E Block building.

Stage 2 of the project was commissioned in 2021 and has been completed in 2023. This included a Senior Industrial Technology Building, Senior school GLA block and courtyard and additional amenities. Stage 2 was also constructed by Paynters,

Milpera State High School – Master Plan

Milpera State High School Master Plan, by Biscoe Wilson Architects, identified six precincts for improvement. The major requirements identified by the school were to enhance the play spaces, and provide more and varied outdoor learning/ siting areas.

The existing green environment is preserved and enhanced by additional planting and the planned replacement of existing trees. Trees are proposed as markers and as place-making elements.

Linkages between and within the major Precincts have been improved. Visual markers are intended to link the various spaces. Views from quiet areas overlook the active areas. Conversely, quiet areas are shielded from active areas by devices such as low level planting and seating elevation.

The External Spaces Master Plan for Milpera State High School defines the framework for the long term development of external spaces that will enhance the educational, sporting and collegiate environment of the school for students, staff, and volunteers.

Bulimba State School – Master Plan

Biscoe Wilson Architects, having worked with Bulimba State School over a number of years, developed a master plan to assist the school and P&C Association in realising the school’s potential in coming years. Through the preparation of a Master Plan, Bulimba State School aims to create the best possible learning environment for its staff and students into the future.

The physical environment should foster the development of students with the aim of helping students to become, “Healthy Citizens, Informed Citizens, Creative Citizens, Democratic Citizens and Eco-Citizens”. The Bulimba State School environment should facilitate community relationships within the school and with the wider community. We have developed a three Dimensional CAD model of the site and buildings. This model will remain a live planning resource that the school can utilise.

Bulimba State School received the Premiers Sustainability Award for Schools in 2013.
