Albany Creek SHS-Additional Accom

[24.07.2019] Architectural plans of the new building proposed for Albany Green State High School.

Biscoe Wilson Architects were invited by the Queensland Department of Education to be the principle consultant for a new building for the expanding Albany Creek State High School. A combined one-storey and two-storey building with a cranked ‘L’ shape was proposed to suit the long sloping terrain. The ‘L’ plan also establishes a feeling of opportunity and refuge. The plan and section were designed to minimise earthworks onsite while enabling a connection from the school on the lower side of the building through to the existing sporting facilities adjacent the upper level.  A lift and covered link expands the accessible network around the school.

Downstairs, the building will accommodate a new Robotics and Development area. A variety of General Learning Areas (GLAs), Flexible Learning Areas (FLAs), Staff Rooms, a data room, and provisions for future amenities will help ease the growing student population at Albany Creek State High School. The angled ‘L’ shape and sloping site provided the opportunity for an outdoor amphitheatre.

The proposed building is currently under development, with works expected to be completed for use in 2020. This new building, like many others Biscoe Wilson Architects have designed, is designed to be environmentally sustainable and provide an inspiring and comforting atmosphere ideal for both teaching and learning. The linear, single room thickness plan promotes cross ventilation and natural day lighting. Environmentally sustainable design and appropriate passive solar design is a fundamental objective at Biscoe Wilson Architects. We are interested in creating excellent education facilities that promote learning and well-being.

Materials were chosen to be durable yet playful. The Colorbond Whitehaven roofs and Shale Grey metal wall sheeting compliment the Dulux Softsun, Spring Sprout and Quarterdeck fibre cement wall sheeting. Inside, the Godfrey Hirst Curriculum Study Green and Tuition carpets are both refined and inspired.
